my partner and i are planning to set up a small network (3-10 machines). we'll be doing database inquiries from every workstation, real-time data acquisition from some, software development on at least one. we'd like to use some flavor of Ethernet to do the talking, probably an IBM PC AT clone for a file server (not locked into either one, though), and--you guessed it--Amigas for low-cost, multitasking workstation nodes which have reasonable processing power in their own right. not to mention a reasonable user interface. "wonderful," you all say, "love to see it," "hope they make it work." i was afraid of that. has anybody tried anything like this? is there any remote possibility that Novell NetBIOS or 3Com's Etherseries might chug along on a Sidecar? understand, we're good hackers, but not fools--we don't want to develop a whole new network system just because we like Amigas. so be Phil Donahues out there, help us out. give Amigaland a boost and save us from having to run to Big Blue! mail me or post--if i get any interesting replies via former, i'll post them. thanks, rick wayne ps: think I'M nuts? i won't even tell you about how my partner wants an AT&T 6300 plus worked in so he can develop in UNIX...sigh.

Check with Ameristar Technologies, in NY. They claim to have an ethernet controller, both in the plug-into-the-si-of-the-amiga and 100 pin expansion bus boards. These are the same people that say they have NFS running too. They have an ad in the back of AmigaWorld (the world's only content-free mag.). I've spoken to them about their expansion chassis and ST506 disk system. Together, about $1K without drive. Hmm... -- Louis A. However, at least one company (can't recall their name) advertised an Ethernet board for the Amiga in the last AmigaWorld. Standard 100 pin AMiga expansion bus thing. It'd certainly be worth your while to check this out before commiting to anything PCish, whether on the SideCar or on a real PC. -- /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ Dave Haynie {caip,ihnp4,allegra,seismo}!cbmvax!daveh "I gained nothing at all from Supreme Enlightenment, and for that very reason it is called Supreme Enlightenment." -Gotama Buddha These opinions are my own, though for a small fee they be yours too. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

Hi, I was over at my parent's house last night, and they were playing around with their c-128 on Quantum Link. There is an Amiga interest group there. I noticed that the following company had a little blub up. The only bad part was the price... I think it was something around $700-- but that is about typical of an ethernet board. Claims to be real TCP/IP. Ameristar Technology PO Box 415 Hauppauge, NY 11788 Sorry, they didn't have a phone # in the article. Kind of silly that Quantum Link has an Amiga group, since they don't (at least as far as I know) have a software kit for dialing in from an Amiga. --Bill Bill Mayhew Division of Basic Medical Sciences Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine Rootstown, OH 44272 USA (216) 325-2511 (wtm@neoucom.UUCP)
