[net.micro.amiga] Rumors: Sidecar & 1.2

[ Your favorite anti-lineater clause he

Well, I've heard from a fairly reliable sources that the Sidecar won't be
released in the US! First off because they didn't pass FCC. Second because
it will be built into the A2000 that they won't bother with the A1000. This
stinks! We deserve to get it as much as the Europeans do. Would anyone from
C-A like to comment.

Also, he also said that he had the released version of 1.2 (he's running a
BBS with four disks under it) and says that C-A's having trouble deciding on
distribution/is it good enough/etc. Looks like we'll be waiting a little while
longer.

This is probably not the whole truth but a lot of rumor that sounds very serious
and deserves a little looking at. We deserve to get 1.2 if it's ready as well
as the updated graphics chip. (Just let us pay $20 or whatever for the dealer
to remove one and put the other in. It's socketed so shouldn't be too hard..)
We also deserve the Sidecar. First the transformer is a total flop then C-A
comes out with a true winner and BOOM! we can't get it. So it seems...

I ain't the Amigo but I feel like it...

The sidecar is still on the books for US release, however it is on hold pending
FCC approval. In fact I hear that there are a several hundred sitting in a
warehouse somewhere around here. The sidecar has passed the German FDZ (kind
of a combined FCC & UL) testing, so there is no obstacle to selling in places
other than the US of A. It's hard to say anything nice about the FCC testing
requirments...

Relase 1.2 is in the hands of the Commodore Quality Assurance people. They
have the responsibility for deciding whether the new release goes out through
the normal distribution channels. Note that the 'Official 1.2 Release' is
equivalent to '1.2 beta something-or-other' so that people in the developers
world may already have it.

The 'high-resolution graphics chips are still in research and development mode
out a Los Gatos. They are not likely to be pin-compatible with the current
A1000 mainboard, but perhaps a clever person will be able to design some kind
of adapter board - it's too soon to tell!

As far a the Transformer being a total flop, that is a matter of opinion. It
does work, and is available. I think that's pretty amazing myself. True, the
performance is dissapointing, but can you do better? After all, that's part
of the impetuous for the Sidecar!

The Genlock has been through multiple revision cycles, trying to achieve a good
compromise between operation in a professional environment and with consumer
grade VCR's. Both it and the Framegrabber must pass FCC testing before they
can be sold at you local dealer.

-----

Someday soon we will be able to pack the speed power and majesty of the Cray-II
in a case the size and cost of the Amiga - Unfortunatly, you will not be able
to buy it here, since it will never pass FCC. 8-) :-(

Boy did I blow it! Should never have claimed tru-facts...

I am informed by the Amiga Software Developement people that the 1.2 release
mentioned above is not the same as *any* of the 1.2 beta test releases. It is
a distinct separate release.

Sorry for the confusion....
