Unlike transistors, there is an inexorable wear-out mechanism in vacuum tubes -- the cathode eventually loses its ability to emit electrons, and the game is over. For short- and medium-term absences (and to ensure the screen doesn't burn if you forget), automatic blanking is nice. However, if you are going to leave the machine unused overnight, turn the monitor off!
