[net.micro.amiga] Need advice before Amiga purchase

asf@sbcs.UUCP (Alan S. Fink) (09/26/86)

After a considerable amount of thought, I've reached the decision that
my next computer will probably be the Amiga. Although I currently have an
*old* Apple II+ and peripherals, I'm not impressed enough with the new IIGS
to warrant running out and buying it. I considered the Mac, but its out of
my price range (for a well stocked machine), so I'm considering the Amiga
primarily on the basis of price, 68000 chip, and a growing software base.
Now my questions (since I really don't know too much else about the
machine):

    1) What is available in terms of memory expansion besides the 256K card
offered by Commodore? How do they install?

    2) Is there any sort of expansion unit so I can plug in special cards
(one of the nice features of the Apple II line)?

    3) If I'm not interested in color, what monochrome monitors are avail-
able? Does the Amiga output gray scales instead of color on these
monitors? A good display ranks high on my list of priorities, so
        this is an important question.

    4) Hard disks, printers etc... What's *good* on the market these days?
Also, I have a Okidata 82a with graphics chip. Can I use that?

    5) Modems and communications software. What modems does the machine
like (specifically a Hayes or U.S. Robotics, 2400 bps)? Also, is
there any software providing vt100 emulation (I missed the recent
net postings on this - sorry)?

    6) Finally, is anybody (among the Amiga owners reading this) unhappy
with the Amiga? In other words - why should I *not* buy an
	Amiga?

Please respond by e-mail to me. With enough positive responses, I'll post a
follow up plug to the net.

Thanks in advance.
