[ Is the line eater Hayes compatible ...] I was in a local discount computer outlet today and saw two versions of the Avatek 1200 modem, one was called the 'Avatek 1200' and the other was called the 'Avatek 1200hc'. They were going for $80 and $140 each, respectively. The salesperson implied that the former was 90% Hayes compatible while the latter was 100% compatible and thus cost more. I picked up and read the manuals for both, and a quick (5 minute) browsing through the sections on command sequences, instructions, and warnings, etc., failed to any difference between the two. There were no other differences that I could see anywhere on the two boxes: just a little 'hc' after the 1200 on the one that was $60 more. Does anyone out there in netland have any idea what the difference between these two could possibly be? I seem to remember a long discussion on Avatek a couple of months ago, but did not pay any attention to it. Maybe someone remebers and can tell me if it had anything to do with this. Can anyone with an Avatek modem report any results of trying to use it as a Hayes compatible modem? Please mail replies to me. I will post results to net sometime next week if there is interest. Thanks in advance. -- Franco Barber ..!cbosgd!cbuxc!cblpe!feb
