[net.micro.amiga] Unix-on-the-Amiga

cy@killer.UUCP (Cyrus Foughty) (10/15/86)

Well, how about Unix V on the Amiga, does anyone know of any plans to move
it there? Does anybody care? Moving Unix to the Amiga would mean BIG hard disk
and the 68020 processor would be a big help also! I would even welcome OS-9
to the Amiga. Somebody tell me something, even your opinion(GASP) ;-) .

Please folks, lets not ruin the machine by porting Unix to the Amiga. I've
worked with Unix for many years, and quite frankly the Amiga OS architecture
with its loadable drivers, user loadable DOS handlers, sharable libraries,
message passing IPC, etc is at the _very_ least a refreshing change from
the monolith the Unix kernel has become (e.g. SUNs kernel is ~500K at last
count). Yes, I read the same papers you do, and know about other Unix
kernel architectures out there (e.g. Ridges Sys V kernel), but lets face it,
if it isn't Sys V, Berkeley, or Xenix, it isn't widely used.

If you want Unix on a 68020, and don't want to pay mucho $$, look up
a little company called SUN Microsystems on the West Coast. With a bit
of negotiating, you probably can purchase a 3/50 for less than its list
price of $8K (?), and have a machine from a company that does, in my
opinion, the best job of Berkeley Unix on 68020 hardware anywhere. By the
time you're finished retrofitting the Amiga with all it needs to match
the SUN hw/sw, you will have spent similar amounts of money. And you will
have gone to at least 3 different vendors, and quite possibly a furniture
store to purchase an extra desk for your office..

PS. Flamers beware: I am an exuberant fan of the Amiga, the SUNs, Unix, etc,
etc, and any other hw/sw that is properly applied. Please don't accuse
    me otherwise.
