[net.micro.amiga] My external drive sings.

cjhoward@watnot.UUCP (Caleb J. Howard) (10/29/86)

Hello, Me again.
Ummm... My external drive has taken to emitting a very high pitched
squeal periodically. I just bought a batch of black disks that seem
to be defunct three times out of ten, so it might be just the disks
making the noise. Has anyone else had this problem. Has anyone got
some advise. Should I have it serviced? Should I scrap the disks?
Should I sacrifice a goat under a new moon?
I don't know about these disks. They're black, they come in white
unmarked celophane wrapped boxes of ten without labels. The guy I bought
them from was a bit of a sleaze, but he says (so it isn't necessarily
true) that they're elephant disks. They're crap. As I said, three out
of ten either won't format at all, or die out quickly.
Back to the tonal external drive. None of my disks sing in the internal
drive, but not all of them sing in the internal drive. I suspect that some
variable element in the drives is slightly bunged in the external one,
causing it to be more sensitive to the crap disks. Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated.

Brad: People like you, perhaps?
Columbia: HA! I've seen it.

All the Elephant brand black diskette that I've seen have been
1s2d, and thus might not be wise to use in the amiga. If they
haven't polished the back side, that might be what is making the
drive sing.

Somebody sold one of our IBM-portable users some black diskettes
that came in a yellow box marked, "Elephant 1s2d". Needless to
say, they did not work out very well, even in the IBM.

Sorry to respond via the net. Something is wrong with our news
mailpaths file.

I've experienced exactly this sort of high-pitched singing sound, not
unlike the sound you can get running a moistened finger around the rim
of a glass. It has ONLY happened with disks that have a "cheaper feel"
to them (nearly always black, in view of other current discussion...).
These disks have plastic sleeves that are much thinner and lighter
than the blue Sony disks I always use myself. Interestingly enough, the
only black disks (hence the only singing disks) I have are the 1.2 beta
release disks I receive from C-A! Since the first thing I do with those
disks is copy them to working copies, I don't worry an awful lot.

In answer to your questions, then, I believe the problem is in the
disks themselves, and not in the drives. As you said, their source
was a bit of a sleaze...

Perhaps. I usually find, however, that sacrificing a slow left-lane driver
at a full moon works better (1/2 :-)... [see net.auto to understand]
