Ray: If you are still here, we need someway to search within a note now that digested notes are being put in the mod.* groups. There's too much info and it takes too long to replot unwanted material at 1200 baud. Fortunately, the digests have an index. It would really help if we could jump to specific topics within the digested notes. Other niceties that news has: the ability to skip certain topics. For example, I would like to skip certain names@site and certain topics such as OS-9(nothing against os-9, i just wrote that as an example). I've had to drop most of the net.micro.* groups because of too much volume. Most of my time is spent waiting for the screen to replot. These suggestion if implemented could save significant time in notesfiles for alot of us. Carl DeLong

In keeping with the spirit of this request, it seems that a multiple level note index/response would be beneficial as an implemented feature. i.e. A hierarchy of notes/responses. For example, a base note on subject AAA might have 4 responses until such time as a "sub-response" branched off of response #4. When displaying response #4, a "sub-index page" is presented as to the pertinent "sub-sub-responses" to #4. If another natural response to subject AAA is received (#5), it is placed in current normal form on the display screen following the sub-index page display. Using `;' on base note #4 gets #1, #2, #3 (normal responses to base note), #4 (sub-index page), sub-sub-response to #4, and then #5 (a normal response to original base note) [tree-parsing]. Moderated notes could be a series of sub-sub-responses to a digest response to a moderated base note. This schema would allow a group, say net.stuff, to be composed of a base note mod.stuff, as well as individual postings to net.stuff that are unmoderated. Readers of notes should be able to select ONLY moderated base notes or look at everything. This schema also includes the capability to have a notefile such as net.sources with base notes of net.sources.{wanted,games,mac,pc,vax,flames,etc.} so that readers can get directly to what they want by looking at the sub-sub-response to that subject. Ad infinitum, more discussion is available if there is any interest in such.
