Subj; 3 statements and 1 question Did you know -? 1) 'The Art of Noise' was originally a pamphlet written by the Italian Futurist Luigi Russolo (somewhere around 1920, not exactly sure; I've got it at home). In it, he suggests that music can be made of pure noise. Indeed, he built and performed on home-made instruments called 'buzzers', 'whirrers', 'roarers', etc. This is all before the invention of the tape recorder. 2) Pere Ubu is a character in a series of plays by the dadaist, Alfred Jarry. These were also written around the '20's. They're short, wierd, funny and great. Check them out at your local library or (large) bookstore. 3) That, in general, most of the imagery that accompanies 'nu-wave' (not hardcore or punk) is directly stolen from the Dada movement of the 20's and 30's? It is the precursor of Surrealism. Looking at pictures of the Cabaret Voltaire (yep, that was a dada hangout), is like looking at pictures of some NYC nu-wave club. Don't believe me? Check out a book on Dada (there are lots) - the same faces, the same clothes, the same sets, attitudes, etc. 4) Question: has the Talking Heads' movie, 'Stop making sense' been released anywhere? Anyone seen it? What do you think? - Karl

I liked Stop Making Sense, but not as much as most of the reviewers did. Perhaps the reason for that was that the theater that I saw it in did not have very good sound. Or, was that true of the movie in general. Another thought was that the movie is quite a revelation for those who have not seen the band in concert (at least on the last tour), but for those who have the movie wasn't as good as the concert (hence, a bit of a let down). If you find consider Talking Heads God, why don't you get their name right. It's just Talking Heads, not the Talking Heads. -Ron
