Bay Area ACM/SIGGRAPH October 1989 Meeting "Computer Graphics and Special Effects in the Movies: an Evening with Industrial Light and Magic" October 24, 1989, 8 pm Xerox PARC Auditorium 3333 Coyote Hill Road Palo Alto Speakers include: Douglas Kay, Jonathan Luskin, Jay Riddle, Les Dittert, and Scott Anderson. The Computer Graphics Department of Industrial Light and Magic is responsible for the production of special visual effects for motion pictures and television through the use of computer graphics technology. Members of the department will describe some of the tools and techniques used in various application areas. Work from recent productions will be used to illustrate the presentations. Douglas Kay is the computer graphics department co-manager. He has contributed to a number of motion picture projects including "Star Trek IV", "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and "The Abyss". He graduated with a masters degree in Computer Graphics from Cornell University. Jonathan Luskin is a computer graphics animator. He has worked on a number of motion picture projects including "Star Trek IV", "Willow", "The Abyss" and "Back to the Future II" as well as a soon to be released body war simulator ride at Disney World. He graduated from Cornell University with degrees in Political Science and Electrical Engineering. Jay Riddle is a computer graphics supervisor. Starting as a camera man in the animation dept., Riddle has worked on such features as "Cocoon", "Back to the Future" and "Star Trek IV" (during which he moved to computer graphics). He graduated from the film school at the University of Southern California. Les Dittert is a computer graphics project supervisor specializing in the area of digital compositing. He has worked on such projects as "Willow" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", as well as a number of commercials. He took a computer science degree from U.C. Berkeley. Scott Anderson is a Computer graphics animator. He has worked on a number of theatric projects at ILM such as "The Abyss". He has also worked on a variety of television projects including a "Star Tours" commercial and a segment for an upcoming PBS series. Anderson graduated from Brown University with an S.C.B in Computer Science and an A.B. in Semiotics.
