The Bay Area chapter of ACM/Siggraph - the Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques - announces its February meeting: ARTISTS AND GRAPHICS: TALES FROM THE REAL WORLD Sara Roberts, Video Artist, Independent Mark Malmberg, Art Director, Xaos Steve Williams, Animator, Industrial Light & Magic 8:15 pm Tuesday, Feb. 26 Exploratorium, McBean Theater San Francisco, CA This month's meeting looks at computer graphics from the artist's perspective. Our speakers will each discuss a project they've recently completed, describing the process that took them from original idea to finished piece, and pointing out both the technical and creative problems they overcame along the way. They will emphasize how using computer graphics and interactive systems affected not only the process of reaching specific artistic goals, but also how the media changed the goals themselves. This meeting should appeal to technical experts looking to put a better understanding of art behind their graphics, and to artists from other media who are interested in working with computer graphics and interactive systems. Everyone with an interest in improving graphics tools is encouraged to attend and comment. Sara Roberts is an independent video artist and teacher. She'll describe some of the interactive video installations she's created. Mark Malmberg is art director at Xaos in San Francisco. He'll talk about some of the "painterly" image processing techniques Xaos has developed (e.g., the opening titles for SF's "Evening Magazine"). Steve Williams is head animator at Industrial Light & Magic. He'll describe the making of some recent commercials that featured animated CG characters (the Heinz Ants and the BP Hummingbirds). Directions to The Exploratorium The Exploratorium is located between Lombard and Marina in north San Francisco, near the Golden Gate Bridge and Crissy Field. Bay Area Siggraph meetings are always free and open to anyone. Bay Area Siggraph meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month, with the exception of July, August, and December. Meeting location alternates between the Exploratorium and Xerox PARC.
