[net.database] INGRES and ORACLE

tiberio@seismo.CSS.GOV (Mike Tiberio) (08/21/85)

We have used INGRES here at the Center for Seismic Studies for over three
years. Originally we used the Berkeley version, now we use RTI. When I
approached a buddy at another firm that uses ORACLE, with the problem of
how to do an outer join, I found ORACLE had an easy to use extension of the
select (=retrieve) command. RTI in their applications notes give an example
of how to do it, however their method is much more convoluted. By the way we
timed RTI vs Berkeley INGRES and found a three way join to be 60 times faster
for RTI. A sort was 2 times faster for RTI and a replace was slightly slower
for RTI. These tests were done about 2 years ago.
