[net.database] Oracle vs. Ingres

jfp@mck-csc.UUCP (John Pries) (10/03/85)

I am contemplating purchasing a DBMS for my HP9000 series 500....
We will use this for databases with financial type numbers (db sizes of
1Mb to 250 Mb). The system will be used to generate tools to support
queries over relatively static databases.

I've heard some bad things about Oracle utilities (such as data loading
from flat files, forms management, etc). I've heard neither good nor bad
about Ingres. Oracle has an "integrated" spreadsheet (123 keystroke
compatable) but it's bugridden (but its still in beta test).

Product compatability between PCs and the HP is a plus ... immediate
networked versions are less important (but matter over the long term).

Oracle costs ~18K ... I've been unable to get an Ingres quote (they say
HP sells it ... HP says they haven't heard of it).

Any experiences with these (or evaluations of them) would be very helpful.
Please respond via Email ... I'll summarize and post if there's interest.
Thanx in advance ............
                                           regards,
