[net.database] Looking for ISAM package

thompson@apr.UUCP (The Software Warrior) (10/30/85)

I am looking for an ISAM package that is fairly low cost and will run on
either an IBM PC or an NCR Tower running SV Unix (and preferably both).

It must handle at least 10 keys and multiple levels of keys are
desireable.

Desireable Features are

	* Upgradeable to a real database manager (if the application
	  warrants)

	* Fit in a small amount of memory ( smaller than 20K ) on the
	  IBM PC side.

	* Available Source Code

	* Small or no Royalties for applications using the ISAM
	  libraries.

	* Resonalbly efficient and able to work on a large amount of
	  records.

	* Same package will run on a Unix machine that runs on a PC.

The application I have maintains records on several IBM PC's and on a
common Unix machine. On the PC side there is already a lot of software
in memory so room is tight.

Right now the best canidate is C-ISAM from RDS. It runs on both the PC
and the Unix box, and the generated files can be handled by Informix.
The package handles a large number of keys (I cant remember what the
limitation was but the number of keys was more than adequete).
Unfortunatly the package is fairly costly.

Also does anyone have experience with the ISAM libraries included in
"C Programmer's Library" by Purdum, Leslie, and Stegemoller, published
by QUE ? I know that the book is fairly renown for its chapter on ISAM
libraries, but how good are these libraries ? They mention that they are
slow, but how slow is slow ?

Also has anyone heard of a package called CTREES or CBTREES ? and what
are the problems and/or benifits with these packages.

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

A package that has all the features that you mention (including no
royalties ) is the PHACT-dbrm (database record manager) and is available
on a wide variet of UNIX(tm) and MS-DOS(tm) machines. It is written in
C and is aimed at C programmers. You can get it from Unipress Software.
