*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR MESSAGE *** Does anyone have information on the performance differences running INGRES under VMS and UNIX (specifically ULTRIX)? We currently have an INGRES application running on a VAX 11/750 under VMS 4.1. The system configuration is 2 meg of physical memory, 1 RM80, 1 RM05, no FPA. Since this system is used exclusively for this particular application, we don't care what operating is used, only that the machine can perform the task. Since we do not have any UNIX systems in-house, it would be useful to us to have the benefit of others' experience in this area. I realize that this system is under configured for the application, but before it is upgraded a determination of which operating system to use would be realistic. All information will be summarized to the net. Ed Orton Mitel Corporation 350 Legget Drive P.O. Box 13089 Kanata, Ontario K2K 1X3 Phone: (613) 592-2122 Mail: utcsri!{orton | ego!ed}

We are a VAX 11/780 installation running Ultrix 1.1 and are attempting to bring up Version 8 of Ingres from the 4.3 BSD distribution tape on our machine. After initial success, we have encountered consistent I/O errors using print and printr which return messages such as "Unix error," "Bad file number," etc. Presumably these are due to the changes between 4.2 and 4.3 BSD. Before trying to track down these errors in the source code, we would like to know: (1) Has anyone else tried this besides us? (Advice, assistance?) (2) Is what we are trying to do in fact hopeless?
