<110@emacs.UUCP> Subject: Re: The Best This-ism, Bush-Mania, Frip

emacs!pz (Paul Czarnecki) congratulates ada-uts!wayne on his fine
posting style, and offers suggestions to where he can find more Phil
Collins music similar to "In the Air Tonight". He suggests "Face
Value" and "Hello, I Must Be Going" for starters. He also comments
that there is a big difference between stars like Madonna, Cyndi
Lauper, etc. and Kate Bush, Frip, etc. in that the former have no
feeling (except perhaps greed) in their music, whereas the latter know
how to feel their music.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<1042@jhunix.UUCP> Subject: Peter Gabriel

jhunix!ins_alk (Lewis Komarow) is looking for information on a CD
release of one of Peter Garbriel's first three albums, and informs us
that a new PG album is coming out in a few weeks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<10806@ucbvax.BERKELEY.EDU> Subject: a (perhaps) interesting psychological phenomenon

ucbvax!rosen (Rob Rosen) would like people to mail him a summary of
whether or not when they hear a piece of music in a studio version,
then in a live version (or vice versa) they decide that one version is
better than the other (better of course determined by the listener's
taste).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<218@mit-eddie.UUCP> Subject: Re: Peter Gabriel

Regarding the recent Peter Gabriel inquiry, mit-eddie!nessus (Doug
Alan) indicates that it is probably a recent release, most like PGIII.
He states that a PG albums is likely to be out this year since PG and
Kate Bush albums always come out in the same years.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<22300027@ada-uts.UUCP> Subject: Re: Coupla Things

ada-uts!wayne gives us the name of the album which had Tim Curry's
"Paradise Garage" on it -- "Fearless". He tells us that "Paradise
Garage" mocks disco.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<809@masscomp.UUCP> Subject: Re: The Best This-ism, Bush-Mania, Frip

masscomp!lip (John Lipinski) comments on the recent discussion about
how "art survives" by stating, with reference to popular items like
the "Ten Best" on the charts, it is hard to decide between what your
heart wants and what your mind wants.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<1076@decwrl.UUCP> Subject: re: Suzanne Vega & Jane Siberry

dec-akov68!boyajian (Jerry Boyajian) agrees with mit-eddie!nessus that
Suzanne Vega's music is of a different flavor than Jane Siberry's. He
also agrees that just part of one song is not enough to determine
whether or not Siberry is "deep". He concluded by giving us the name
of a Jane Siberry album ("No Borders Here") which is available in the
U.S. on Open Air Records, a division of Windham Hill, distributed by A&M.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<220@mit-eddie.UUCP> Subject: Who stole Larry Palena's brain? Please give it back!

mit-eddie!nessus (Doug Alan) comments on just how many people have
hard of Kate Bush, by stating that her album is at #1 on the British
charts and is the most well-known female musician in England.
[Moderator's note: her single is at #35 on Billboard's Hot 100, so she
is definitely heard of in the US, too.]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<2439@sjuvax.UUCP> Subject: Re: Finally: The top n album list

sjuvax!kirsch (Paul Kirsch) informs us that he has gotten information
on some relatively unknown bands from the net, something he cannot do
from US rock magazines. He tells us his preference in bands that like
to depress other people (Pink Floyd, the Cure), and his favorite album
by Led Zeppelin is the first one.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<2440@sjuvax.UUCP> Subject: Re: Some better guitarists than Fripp and Frith...

sjuvax!lp02911 (Larry Palena) claims that Alex Lifeson of Rush's solos
don't make any sense, and claims that Jimmy Page's solos are not
clumsy, but not perfect. He states that Page has always been a
distinctive guitarist and always will be.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<2441@sjuvax.UUCP> Subject: Re: Led Zeppelin fans and Jimmy Page

sjuvax!lp102911 (Larry Palena) states that Page looks the way he does
because of frail health, aggravated by years of working with Led
Zeppelin. He points out the significance of the performance of
"Stairway to Heaven" due to the British hippie generation's
identification with it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<2442@sjuvax.UUCP> Subject: Re: "Hounds of Love" at number one!

sjuvax!lp102911 comments on his "tarnishing" of Husker Du, by stating
that a band which thrown chairs could not be any more tarnished.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<16999@watmath.UUCP> Subject: Re: Music and Style: All Show and No Go??

watmath!jmsellens (John M Sellens) indicates that a headless bass
seems to be an indicator that a band is more concerned with
appearances than other things.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<60700002@hpfclr.UUCP> Subject: Re: Siouxsie/Banshees and Echo/Bunnymen

hpfcla!davel reports that Echo and the Bunnymen are on a one-year
hiatus at present, and their lead singer Ian McCullough has released
some solo work. He recomments their second album "Heaven Up Here".
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<430@sii.UUCP> Subject: More guitarist picks

sii!mem (Mark Mallett) gives us more names of great guitarists:
William Ackerman, Alex de Grassi, and Michael Hedges of Windham Hill,
Mike Oldfield, John Renbourne, Guy van Duser, Randy Armstrong, Preston
Reed and Nancy Wilson from elsewhere. He claims that many of the
names that have already been posted are great technically but not so
interesting to listen to.
