Doug Alan proposed to me that I use mod.music to distribute the love-hounds digest. He indicated that a lot of sites were running into problems with the costs of forwarding the mail associated with the digest. I took a brief look at the content of a sample digest, and it seems to conform to the charter of mod.music, which is reasonable discussions about music. I have no problems as of now with using mod.music to distribute the digest. However I would like the opinions of others before I do this. Please send responses to me indicating your support or rejection of this idea, if you think the idea is bad, why, and any other solutions you might have. If I do not receive too many opposing opinions I will start distribution. Your opinions are most welcome. One word about doing summaries: due to a pressing project, my time has become somewhat limited to do summaries. I encourage you to send articles to me to post, though, and I will do what little summarizing I can when I am able. -- It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how I keep from goin' under. And THE BANDS STILL PROJECTED A SOCio/Personal concern in their songs???? 2nd band was EMBRACE and they were definitely the best show there. There wasn't much stand-out playing but with Ian MacKaye at the helm you can't go wrong. He's gotta be the most together guy in the whole fucking world. He's got one of the most emotive faces this side of off-broadway ... it is accenuated by the shaved head. The faces and motions he makes remind one of those two masks used as a symbol for the theatre .. you know the one is crying and the other laughing. At other times, he looks like a Buddist Monk in deep meditation. At other times, he looks like a confused, little kid who has watched too much TV. I wanted to change places with him just for a minute to feel how cool it would be to be him. I know he'd probably think I'm bonkers but if I only could ... They have a great lineup of songs, with titles like "No More Pain", "You are not really free while others are captive", and "What can I do?". When Ian sings this last song he strives to make eye contact with the audience and when his eyes touch mine, I mouthed back "What can I do?" - a momentary twinkle appeared in his eye as he kept on singing. If you want to know really, what you can do ya gotta start asking yourself that question. For that moment caught in revalation, my wish came true and we traded places. Thank you Ian. The show was at the hall of nations in DC caddycorner to the house that was used in the Exorcist ... so between sets what you do is find someone dressed like the Excorcist (like every 5th girl) and get her to stand out in front of the house then charge passerbys for pictures. No one took me up on it, though. And with all the gullible fuck-nazi-yuppies that infest the bars across the street I was suprised (... something to do for fun: Try and get a beer in this section of town while wearing a Tragic Mullato T--shirt and Army boots) What is REALLY neat about this house is the steps right next to the house, y'know where the priest fell down and had his head turned around by the devil. As we (me and a friend) approached these steps a bright red head appeared coming up ... we momentarily jumped and hugged each other but it was only a jogger. Look down these steps and it reminds you first of the movie, second of a frame from an Alfred Hitchcock flick (Vertigo, perhaps). Needless to say, the Hall of Nations is a Kool place to see a band. The other bands, quick, cuz I talked too much alread where: Dag Nasty - this was the band I DIDN't include on the hothothotest band list I talked about previously. Maybe I gotta get familar with their tunes more or something but this was one of the bands where everything started sounding the same ... we left in the middle of the set to go find some coffee so I can't really vouch for all their songs. Rites of Spring - just don't sound as clear and good as their vinyl but I think this was due more to a lousy sound man (he kept on letting the most obnoxious between song feedback to come through). They did a lot of songs that aren't on the album so I give them high marks for taking chances. I think I'll like the songs if I can hear them more clearly. Beefeater - headlined. Fun band, this time I really felt the Minutemen spirit in their songs. Tomas pretty much kept his mouth shut since there really wasn't anyone there that was worth insulting and he just didn't feel like ranting. Maybe he had to go to work the next day like me, I dunno. Fred, the guitarist, was having fun with the feedback, using it pretty much to his advantage. The bassist is tops, can really cook and the drummer was playing, like, real fast ... the double bass set (which I rarely see among bands these days) let him do a lotta 16th rhythms giving this band a true heartbeat, one of the real pluses of this "family" of bands - true heartfelt, emotion ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Oh, MR Eggman, I Lawwve you" - Edith Massey in Pink Flamingos ------------------------------------------------------------------------ hofmann P.S. Not to mention your interview with her! I want to see it! (What? You want to see my interview with Kate.... Okay, I'm working on it. I'm still trying to unpack from my trip to England and find the cable I need to copy the tape. Be a little patient.) There is a *wonderful* interview with Kate in the 21 Nov 85 issue of Hot Press (Kate is the cover story). Unfortunately, it is an Irish music paper, so it may be a bit difficult to find in the U.S. I picked up some copies while England. Apparently a lot of KB fans didn't like the interview (there's some hate mail in the 5 Dec 85 issue) because the interviewer asks some unusual and awkward questions that force Kate to reveal some of her weaknesses. But I thought that was great, because the interviewer is clearly a fan and because it shows a lot about about how she thinks, and indicates that to a large extent she manipulates images on a more unconscious level than one might think. I also got a bunch of really nice photos of Kate that I took at the Tower Records in-store. Too bad I can't include them in this message. Summary: Pretty bad Ok. I get there at 8:30 cuz they're supposed to start at 8, and the 9:30club is real bad about starting on time. Also, the Washington Post had some cryptic remark about `get there early, because they disappear after 20 minutes.' So I go in, get my hand stamped, and I find out that they are still doing the sound check. This is usually a sure sign that the show will be at least an hour late. I got real sick of watching DeathRockers and stupid people drinking and havin' a good old time, so I leave for a while. I walked around the block and watched the silly yuppies at Ford Theatre (yes, where ol' Abe was shot). Finally the doors opened and I sat around watching videos and people. They were showing `Apocalypse Now' on the monitors, which is not the most uplifting thing to watch, especially when you're already pissed off because you've been waiting for 45 minutes already. So Peach of Immortality finally come on at 10 or so. I saw these guys a year and a half ago, and they were pretty awful. Well, they've gotten worse. They are a noise/industrial band, but not nearly as interesting as folks like Einsturzende Neubaten. These guys (Peach of I) have *no* rhythm, just a lot of feedback guitars and a guy working a couple of tape decks. I stood around for 10 minutes to see if maybe they'd get interesting, but they didn't, so I left. I walked around some more, came back in, sat in the lobby, went back inside the club, stood around watching more stupid videos... Now it's getting to be like midnite... Jesus and Mary Chain finally appear. They start into their set right away. I really hadn't heard any of their stuff, so I wasn't sure what exactly to expect. I guess they are OK, but nothing to get really excited about. I must admit, I was standing in the corner and couldn't understand any of the words, so maybe the words are what everyone's excited about. Basically, the band is: a guy on vocals, a bassist, guitarist, and standup drummer. One major problem with this band is that they have *no* stage presence whatsoever. They are *boring* to watch. The singer just stands there and sings. The bassist has his back to the audience. The guitarist sits on the floor because he's got to get the guitar close to the amp to feedback. The drummer doesn't move. The other problem is that they are not very good musicians. I'm the last one to criticize someone because they don't play exceedingly well, but it's difficult to see how this band has gotten as popular as they are. The bassist plays mainly on one string, the guitarist basically strums the chords and lets the feedback run amok (I love that phrase -- run amok), and the drummer plays the same beat thru the whole show. They only played 45 minutes, and never said `thank you' or `hello' or `goodbye.' They were in the middle of a song, and the singer went over to the drummer and said something, and then walked off the stage. Then the rest of the band stopped and walked off. Right away a roadie came on and started taking down the equipment. I'd be interested in hearing from other people who've seen them. Sue, did you go? I haven't heard much of their stuff, but everything I have heard of theirs sounds like a normal 60's pop song with feedback and the sound of a blender added. Gee, even I could take a 60's pop song and add a blender. I hear that recently they've gotten rid of the blender. So what's left of interest? Then again, like I said, I haven't heard much of their stuff, so maybe I'm just missing something. I saw one of their videos when I was in England, on one of these video jukeboxes they have in pubs there. It wasn't very exciting. A video called "Legs" by Art Of Noise was really neat, however.
