[mod.newprod] Century C2600 disk drive

usenet@cuae2.UUCP (Netnews Admin) (07/02/86)

The C2600, introduced by Century Data Systems, is a full featured disk
memory product. In keeping with the CDS charter as a major producer of
high performance, high capacity products, the C2600 is a response to
the stated needs of our customers. With its average access time of
only 15ms. and its unformatted capacity of 613 MB, contained on 12 dual
head data surfaces, the C2600 presents itself as a benchmark for the
rest of the industry.

The C2600 has:

ESMD standard interface
1.8MB/s	transfer rate
30,240	bytes/track
845	cylinders
24	read/write heads
1	servo head
3.5ms	track-to-track positioning time
15ms	Average head positioning time
28ms	Maximum positioning time
8.3ms	Average latency time
3600	RPM - rotational speed
>15,000 hours	MTBF (Mean time between failures - powered on)
<30 minutes	MTTR (mean time to repair)
9.0/22.86	Height(in/cm)
8.5/21.59	Width(in/cm)
27.24/69.19	Depth(in/cm) - including detachable power supply
65/30 Operating weight(lb/kg)

Because of its compact mechanical design, two C2600s may be installed
side-by-side in a standard 19 inch Retma rack. Where some models
provide 400-600 MB of storage in a 19 inch enclosure, two C2600s
provide 1.2 gigabytes. Also the power supply is easily detached from
the drive providing extra flexibility where the depth of enclosure
presents a constraint. The detachable power supply is universal for
worldwide applications. No internal wiring changes are necessary for
operation outside of the USA.

As a standalone product the C2600 conforms to NC50 acoustic noise levels
while performing read/write operations and during spin only mode. When
placed in an enclosure the audible noise levels are further decreased
making the C2600 an unobtrusive addition to many work areas outside the
computer room.

[I have had my C2600 for a couple weeks now. The thing which sets it apart is
the on-board diagnostics which communicate through an alpha-numeric display.
Slick! The drive is on an 11/780 with Emulex sc780 controller. If you
have any other questions feel free to Email to me. //Z\\]
