MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- June 24, 1986 -- Sun Microsystems today announced
the introduction of [...] PC-NFS, software for IBM PCs and compatibles
that allows them to transparently access files and network peripherals
via the Sun Network File System (NFS) on an Ethernet network.
PC-NFS is one of the first two products from Sun's East Coast
Division in Lexington, Massachusetts. [That's us, folks!]

Sun's PC-NFS is a client version of NFS that runs on IBM PCs and
compatible systems. PC-NFS gives PC users transparent file access
among PCs, Sun workstations, and other computers using NFS. Using a
low-priced PC or compatible, with as little as 512K of RAM and one
floppy disk drive, a user can enter standard DOS commands to access
files from any other computer on the network.... The PC-NFS software
automatically converts local MS-DOS filenames to network-compatible NFS
pathnames. NFS is currently supported by many different micro, mini,
and mainframe computer systems. PC-NFS is thus the PC user's gateway
to rich computing environments of UNIX-based systems, as well as VAX
/VMS, and parallel processing systems.
[...]
In addition to transparent file sharing, PC-NFS offers printer spooling
to Sun LaserWriters [and any other printers] on the network. Multiple
PCs running different applications can share high-quality printers to
reduce the cost per user. PC-NFS also provides VT-100 terminal emulation
for direct access via remote login [actually it's "telnet"] to
minicomputers and mainframes linked to the network. This gives the
PC user access to multiple Unix systems and applications.

[Deleted verbose pricing material. The bottom line on pricing:
Software w/manual, no hardware, is $395 qty.1. With a 3Com 3C501 -
the only Ethernet interface we support right now - it's $1045 qty.1.
If you just want the manual, it's $75. For volume stuff, call your
friendly local Sun salesperson, etc. etc.... There's a neat right-to-copy
license scheme for big customers.]

BTW, we're already shipping it.
