[mod.newprod] HP's new supermini with Real-Time UNIX

usenet@cuae2.UUCP (Netnews Admin) (09/15/86)

Hewlett-Packard now offers two technical systems which run HP-UX/RT, a
real-time version of AT&T's UNIX* System V Version 2 Release 2. HP-UX/RT
also includes most of the important 4.2BSD features (such as vi, csh, cylinder
group file system, job control, rlogin, rcp, ARPA networking (TCP/IP),
and sockets), plus many HP enhancements.

The HP enhancements include the following:

    Real-time OS features:
	Non-degrading process priorities
Kernel is pre-emptable by high-priority user processes
Virtual, real, and user interval timers
Reliable signal mechanism based on that of 4.2BSD
Multiplexed I/O arbitration via select(2) as in 4.2BSD
Locking of processes or parts of processes in memory
Pre-allocation of disc space for important files

    High-performance industry standard graphics packages.

NS, HP's proprietary high-performance networking system.

HP's extended Pascal, C, and Fortran 77 languages.

Bug fixes and compatible extensions to System V and 4.2BSD utilities.

Clear, accurate, and usable on-line manual pages and documentation,
fully addressing portability and compatibility issues.

The lower-end system is the HP9000 Series 300, based on MC68010 or '020,
which can be used as a single-user workstation or a multi-user system to
provide real-time access to devices which require high response time.

The high-end system is the HP9000 Series 800 Model 840, based on the new
scalable HP Precision Architecture. This is a supermini that can support
several dozen simultaneous users, providing the same real-time features as
the Series 300, but with higher performance and capacity.
