AT&T EXPANDS VME BOARD FAMILY, CUTS PRICES, ENHANCES
UNIX SYSTEM V/VME, AND ANNOUNCES VENDORS' VMEbus PRODUCT
COMPATIBILITY
Los Angeles, CA -- AT&T has added to its product line a new,
ultra-high performance VMEbus single board computer (SBC) that will
run at 18 megahertz (MHz) -- about 30 percent faster than its
predecessor, the 14 MHz SBC. The Single Board Computer family, the 18
MHz WE 321SB, is fully compatible with the software for AT&T's 14 MHz
board.
Announced at BUSCON/87, in Los Angeles, California, the
new SBC is scheduled to be available in production quantities during
the second quarter of 1987.
AT&T also announced a 13 percent price reduction for its 14
MHz WE321 SBC -- from $4495 to $3895 -- effective February 1. The new
18 MHz model will be priced at $4895, with quantity discounts
available.
Also, AT&T announced that Release 3.1 of its UNIX System V/VME
is scheduled to be introduced in the second quarter of 1987. This new
release will include shared libraries, a streams interface, media-
independent networking support, and a new device driver for Ethernet.
AT&T's Remote File Sharing capability is also supported by
UNIX System V/VME 3.1. This feature allows users to access data on a
remote computer as easily as if it were present on their local
machine. Existing UNIX System V/VME users will be able to upgrade
their systems for a nominal charge.
While at BUSCON, a number of other VMEbus manufacturers
announced product compatibility with UNIX System V/VME and the AT&T WE
321SB VMEbus Single Board Computer. Those companies include: Ciprico
Inc., Plymouth, MN; Clearpoint, Hopkinton, MA; Cytec Software Systems
Inc., Austin, TX; Excelan Corporation, San Jose, CA; Interphase,
Dallas, TX; JMI Software Consultants, Spring House, PA; Microproject
Corporation, Marina Del Rey, CA, and Haarlem, The Netherlands; Mini
Computer Technology, San Jose, CA; Mizar Inc., St. Paul, MN;
Performance Technologies, E. Rochester, NY; and Xylogics Inc.,
Burlington, MA.
AT&T's third-party development program aids other VMEbus
manufacturers who want to ensure compatibility between their products
and UNIX System V/VME. UNIX System V/VME is the only version of the
UNIX Operating System developed by AT&T and tuned explicitly for the
VMEbus environment.
With AT&T's WE 321SB Single Board Computer, users can mix and
match peripheral and memory boards from different vendors to tailor-
make a computer solution that meets their needs. And once the system
is up and running, users will find their demand-paged UNIX System is
both object file and floppy disk format compatible with the AT&T 3B
family of computers. This gives them off-the-shelf access to hundreds
of applications and language packages available for AT&T 3B
computers--something no other VMEbus system offers.
