MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- April 7, 1986 -- Extending its commitment to
distributed computing and network services, Sun Microsystems announced
today extensions to its personal computer (PC) networking product line.
The extensions include a new PC-NFS(TM) Programmer's Toolkit for developing
networked applications and enhancements to its PC-NFS product for net-
working personal computers to dissimilar computer systems on a Network
  File System (NFS(TM)) network.

PC-NFS Programmer's Toolkit
The PC-NFS Programmer's Toolkit provides a standard programmatic interface
to network services which isolates the application developer from vendor-
specific network hardware and cabling changes. Among the services it provides
are 4.2BSD-compatible TCP/UDP sockets, RPC and XDR (eXternal Data
Representation) standards and Yellow Pages. The toolkit libraries run on
IBM PCs, PC/XTs, PC/ATs(TM), Compaq computers, and other PC-compatible
systems using DOS 3.0 or higher and PC-NFS 2.0. The first release of the
toolkit is designed to work with the Microsoft C Compiler Version 4.0 in all
memory models. U.S. list price for the PC-NFS Programmer's Toolkit is $595
per system. A site license (unlimited use in one building is $2,395.

 PC-NFS Release 2.0.
Sun also announced enhancements to its PC-NFS product. PC-NFS is a software
product for IBM PCs and compatibles that allows them to transparently access
files and network peripherals on NFS on an Ethernet network. The enhance-
ments include DOS 3.1-compatible file sharing and record locking utilizing
Sun's network services, additional network services for file transfer (ftp),
remote shell (rsh), and remote copy (rcp), and support for Ungerman-Bass NIC
and Micom-Interlan 5010 network boards, in addition to the current support
for the 3Com 3C501 board. The enhanced release, PC-NFS 2.0, is available in
April, 1987 at a U.S. list price (software only) of $395. Both products are
available 48 hours ARO via Sun telemarketing.
