The only form required for purchasing a shotgun or rifle in California is the Federal Form 4473. This is kept by the dealer -- it doesn't go anywhere. > 2) Handguns - Fill out both the above form as well as > another form that is sent to the local police dept. > as well as the FBI (?). Then there is a waiting > period before the gun can be picked-up. The Federal Form 4473 is filled out, a copy is sent to Sacramento and the police chief of the city where the sale is made. The Feds don't get a copy. The only time that the Federal Government is notified of a handgun sale is if one person buys more than one handgun in five days from the same dealer. > 3) Carry permits are hard to get, in general. > 4) Full Auto, Silencers, unusual ammo - all illegal in CA. > Full auto weapons aren't necessarily illegal in California -- there is a permit process, and some people do get permits. It depends heavily on the county. I know that there is a machine gun dealer in Barstow, CA, because his yellow pages ad says, "Class III dealer". Machine gun permits can't be THAT hard to get in that area, or he couldn't make a living selling full auto weapons. Clayton E. Cramer
