Article: 1:39 I have found that cleaning and preserving a gun with the standard oil provided in Hoppes cleaning kits does a poor job of preventing rust. During the rainy season here, I have found rust growing right through a layer of oil and had to carefullly wipe down the pistol every few weeks. The cure to the problem has been to use WD-40 to preserve the pistol. Pistols wiped down with a cloth soaked in WD-40 had not shown any rust growth after many months of storage.
