Thanks to Clayton Cramer for sending that BATF release on AP ammo. Since they include 7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester) in that list, I am wondering: In these days of high-power single-shot pistols, which can be made in just about any caliber, regardless of it being designated as usually a "rifle" or "pistol" cartridge, is the BATF (and state/local law enforcement) taking the position that ALL ammo is "handgun" ammo, with regard to the somewhat higher level of restricitions built into laws and regulations with that categorization? I recall that .223 and .30-30 ammo was so treated some years back when the Bushmaster pistol and the .30-30 chambering for the T-C came out. It bodes ill... And a side comment regarding carrying. I recall a very interesting front-page story in the Wall Street Journal, some years back, prior to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which was a "color" piece or travelogue type article on life in Afghanistan. The writer mentioned in passing that there was just about no petty or street crime, and people were polite to each other, making normal social interaction quite pleasant. The reason? EVERYBODY was always armed! The people carried guns with the same casual ease that we carry keys or handkerchiefs. Firearms were a normal part of dress. I always felt that that particular story was a great piece of pro-gun propaganda, and wonder why it is never mentioned... And, of course, that universal bearing of arms and the attitude of familiarity with firearms is why that nation was NOT just steamrollered by the USSR.
