One gentleman comments in mod.rec.guns that he has had difficulties with
the Cherokee Gun Accessories people and asks whether anyone else has had
problems. I have made three separate purchases from these folks, and
have had excellent results each time. As I recall, the delivery times
ranged from 3 to 6 weeks. The quality of the goods is excellent. I
particularly like their target grip for the HK-91. It is quite a bit
longer than the stock version, and larger in diameter. It makes the gun
much easier to hold and reduces felt recoil.

Since someone replied to my previous posting, I'd like to say
that the items which I ordered from Cherokee in mid-November
arrived in mid-February. I think that 3 months is an
unacceptable time to have to wait. I also feel that contacting
the Postal Inspector gave the Cherokee folks an incentive
to make delivery.

Now regarding quality, the HK 91 "Competition Magazine Release II"
is not as well-made as its predecessor, which I purchased
in 1982. The current production is not smoothly finished or
symmetrical. Considering that one's thumb must exert a
fair amount of pressure on the lever in order to release the
magazine, one can get a nasty bruise. I had to take a file
to the lever to get it to an acceptable state. In addition,
Cherokee switched from stainless steel spring wire to
something lots softer and presumably cheaper (for them).
I will admit that Cherokee has not increase the price ($39.95) of the
item since 1982, just decreased the quality.

It is a shame that Hechler and Koch does not provide
a magazine release lever for the HK 91. Owning to the
differences between the trigger groups of the G3 and HK 91,
the G3 magazine release lever kit will NOT fit into an HK 91.

I also ordered the HK 91 brass buffer. This costs "only" $10 plus
shipping. It is only a piece of rubbery plastic (polyurethane?)
that one is supposed to GLUE to the rifle. A tube of super
glue is enclosed. You can make your own brass buffer with
a piece of scrap leather. I don't like the idea of gluing
anything to the painted surface of the HK 91, since that
cheap automobile paint chips off rather easily. (The G3
is parkerized.)

All in all, I think that Cherokee charges as much and provides
as little as it can get away with. Remember that those
glowing stories in the gun periodicals about the
magazine release are by writers who
get free samples. I'll bet that those gun writers don't
get their samples from the same stock as ordinary
customers.
