[net.misc.coke] Classic Coke vs. The Real Thing

sorkin@lll-crg.ARpA (Art Sorkin) (10/04/85)

I just returned from Europe and brought with me a can of Coke
which was canned in Gent, Belgium and which said that it was
made with sugar (actually sucre), not fructose. I did a
small taste test comparing that can with a can of Coke Classic.

The tastes of the two Cokes were very similar, but the Belgian
Coke had a little more "bite" than the Classic Coke. That was
very slight. There was a marked difference in one respect
however. The Belgian Coke had an intense Coke aroma if you
put you nose near it. The Classic Coke had little aroma by
comparision.

It appeared that the Classic Coke foamed up more than
the Belgian Coke, but I'm not sure that difference is real.
I tasted them cold; it is possible that the taste difference
would be more pronounced if they had been warm, but, again, I
can't say for sure. All in all, you would have a hard time
telling the difference by taste alone without having the other
there for comparison.

Well, I like Classic Coke better than that new junk,
but there is something not quite right about it.
I have finally decided that it is not exactly the
same as old coke.

For an addict like myself, this is hard to take ...

(This is from Northern California, referring to the
classic coke that comes in cans)

WHY didn't you bring home more than one can? :=)

fayo', and 5 'bwayno dee-us'. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?"

I managed to conduct a similar test this August while returning from Taiwan.
The materials: (1) can Coke, canned in Taiwan. (upon arriving in June, I
was overjoyed to discover shelves of Old Coke and promptly o.d.'d on them for
2 weeks); (1) can Coke Classic, courtesy Northwest Orient Airlines. Both
quaffed straight from the can, as well as on ice. Results?
1) Classic seemed flatter, and fizzed more from the can. Maybe carbonation
levels are different overseas? But I don't remember ever splatting fizz
from an unshaken can of Coke. Only a precise spray pattern over the finger
pulling the top. BTW, Taiwanese Coke cans use fully detachable pull tabs,
and not the clever lever-action ones.
2) Classic lacked the smell of Old Coke. A 5 Coke a day diet will tell you.
3) (very subjective) I can no longer drink Coke (classic) continuously.
Perhaps this is because I know what it is, but on first taste, I suspected
there was something wrong with it. Anybody know what?

(now Novice Coffee drinker,)

It seems that everytime I check misc.coke someone has done a taste test using
Coke from overseas. I grew up in South America and came to the U.S. for
vacations every year. Every single time I came I noticed that the American
Coke was smoother than the South American Coke. The reasons that I consider
are a higher level of carbonation and the different taste of the water. I
really do not see why these differences are being brought up now. Those
differences have always been there and will always be there. This is true
with any cola. There is no reason to take it out against Coke.
