CUT OUT WORLD HUNGER is an event to raise money for charity. It will take place at the Kitchener Farmer's Market (Upper Level) from noon to 7 pm Sunday August 16. The basic idea is that a number of hairdressers from all over Ontario will be donating that time to give FREE haircuts. They will however be asking for a DONATION that will go directly to OXFAM and the GLOBAL COMMUNITY CENTRE. There's more to this event than just haircutting, though! There will be clowns, face painting for the children, and continuous live music all day by local bands! This event was a great success last year. Here are selected quotes from this year's press release: ------------------------------------------------ .. Thanks to the generosity of many, and the hard work and compassion of others, we raised nearly $11,000.00 for African aid. The total was high because CIDA, (Canadian International Development Agency) matched us three dollars for every dollar raised. ... This year, ... , about thirty area hairstylists from salons such as Stylers in Guelph, Capri in Waterloo, The Haircutting Place and Manor House Hairstyling will be cutting hair from noon to 7 pm... ... All they are asking in return for their services is a donation that will go to OXFAM-Canada; an international development organization, working in partnership with people who are struggling against the bonds of poverty and oppression, and THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY CENTRE; a local non-profit and educational resource centre whose mandate is to raise public awareness of, and foster action on international development and social justice issues. ... To add to the enjoyment, we have musical entertainment performing throughout the day... Some of the bands are MEASURE FOR MEASURE; a local band featuring vocalist Mary Anne Epp; TERRY ODETTE AND HIS BAND; presently working on his second album; MILE ZERO, a band combining the fusion sound of UZEB and Level 42 (joe's note: this is MY band! That's my role in this event...), NINE AT THE HELM, a Kitchener band popular with the fans of new music doing a set of almost all original tunes, and much more!
