The lines are now closed for the nite. Calls dropped to 0 soon after 9:00,
guess folks are following the guidelines, thanks everyone. We're preparing a
report on activities now, watch this space in an hour or so. Preliminary looks
show that no one area of the country seemsed to be "locked out" over any other
area. Even the DX came in, 16 orders from Alaska, 13 from NY, {_27 from TX. A
full report to follow. We'll be on the phones again tomorrow. Orders taken
tomorrow will be in the mid-sept range, until order #600. (we're on 497 now).

A preliminary report from TAPR. 10:30pm PDT 8/20/85
every 3.5 min or so. Average time between calls was 5 seconds. The
maximum time was about 10 seconds, except when the local telco switch
crashed. This rate was sustained on both 8/19 and 8/20 from 9:00am
till 9:00pm.
.
The following are totals for phone orders by State/Province:
AL 6; AK 16; AZ 6; AR 2; CA 83; CO 12; CT 8; DE 0; DC 1; FL 9;
GA 10; HI 1; ID 0; IL 9; IN 11; IA 1; KS 1; KY 2; LA 1; ME 0;
MD 12; MA 16; MI 4; MN 2; MS 1; MO 4; MT 1; NE 0; NC 12; ND 0;
NH 2; NJ 15; NM 2; NY 13; NV 1; OH 11; OK 10; OR 1; PA 10; RI 0;
SC 3; SD 1; TN 5; TX 27; UT 8; VT 0; VA 9; WA 17; WV 4; WI 3;
WY 0;  Nova Scotia 1; Ont 7; SAS 1; QU 3;
.
This is a total of 381 calls handled in 24 hours of phone time, or
3.7 minutes per call. As you can see, being in AZ was no help at
all, although it seems CA was the place to be.
.
We did hear from the phone company at around 1:00pm the first day. It
seems that the main switch in the Tucson CO had crashed three times, and
all long distance trunks were jammed. We noticed at least one occasion
where the phone didn't ring for 30 seconds, and when we checked, there
was no dial tone. The phone CO asked us to check with them next time,
as they have a special prefix in the area for "Radio call in shows" and
the like. They also asked if we could stop the calls. Pete explained that
we couldn't. (Pete will be taking future calls from a pay phone near
his home).
.
We are unaware of any action by the phone company to alter the traffic flow,
although we can assume they did something to protect the network. There
was no effect on the call rate at 746-1166.
.
Although phone orders currently total 381, the order numbers passed out
included beta units, and after the first 280 kits, mail orders. All order
numbers up to 290 will be included in the first batch which are due to
ship the week of August 26. All following order numbers up to 600 will
be in the second batch which should ship by mid-September. Due to the
demand, which exceeded even our expectations, we will continue to take orders
past 600, which will ship in October. If conditions warrant, we will
attempt to increase production for October to meet demand.
.
We apologize for the difficulty in reaching the office, but will continue
to work 9:00am to 9:00pm until the phone calls slacken. We will keep
you advised. Thank you for your continued support of TAPR and the
Packet Radio Revolution.

.               !! News Flash from TNC 2 Central !!
*******************************************************
While we did not achieve W.A.S. with sticker for twisted pair (missing
Maine, Vermont and Wyoming), nor even reverse DXCC (we did get VK, OH,
LA, VE, JA, YV, and a couple others) the pile-up has thinned out somewhat.
The telephone calls are down to about a 50% duty cycle since noon local
time today (Wednesday). A full list by states will be published at
the end of the week. We did pick up DE, ID, ND, NE, and RI today.
.
Well over 600 TNC 2s will be making their way to the hands of persistent
packeteers, with the first batch due to ship Monday, 26 August (we got
the good news from the printer today! Manuals should definitely be in our
hands on Friday...). Numbers 301 through 600 (plus or minus a couple)
should ship out by mid-September. Order numbers above 600 will ship
out in October (although we are taking measures to see if that can't
be moved up to very late September).
.
TAPR is of course still accepting orders on a "business as usual" basis.
This means multiple orders, mail orders processed same day received when
possible, etc. We are planning our October production to reach a "ship
from stock" status as early in that month as possible.
.
Your TAPR HotLine crew ("we play the hits"), consisting of NK6K, WB9FLW,
N0CCZ and WA7GXD, on behalf of TAPR, wish to extend our heartfelt thanks
to all of you who particpated thus far in the initial sale of TNC 2.
It makes it all worthwhile! We'll start again tomorrow morning at
9:00am Tucson Time with order number 642. QRZ?
