I had to reply because I just tried hooking up a C Itoh 8510
parallel printer to my 3B2 and had no problems.

I don't know what release this was, but new releases (System V Rel 2
Version 1 and up) this is done for you for all five ports on the ports board

I just took a flat ribbon cable, crimped the connector on
each end (making sure pin one was aligned to the same edge.

You can always do the 'lpadmin' chores manually (although I agree, package
management would be helpful for LP like it is for UUCP and 3BNET. )

So there are my comments for what they're worth.  The usual disclaimer
