[net.micro.att] Which *nix to run on the 6300?

dellinge@muscat.UUCP (Ken Dellinger) (09/12/85)

I'm about to buy an ATT 6300 but I'd like to run *nix instead
of MS-DOS. In the _PC_Buyers_Guide_, 8 unix like OSs are
listed. If you have had ANY experience with any of the
products listed below, please answer the following questions
about your experience. Since I've never used any of these
(or the 6300 for that matter), any help at all will be greatly
      appreciated.

1. Product name & Manufacturer:
2. Date purchased:
3. Price:
4. How complete is the product? Does it include YACC, LEX, UUCP, SCCS,
    etc.?
5. How well does it perform? With 2 users?
6. Does it have any MS-DOS emulation, file transfer, disk partition,
    or application building tools/capability?
7. What version of unix, if any, is it based on?
8. What is the extra charge, if any, for compilers, development tools,
    software updates, etc.?

Products:
    IBM: PC/IX
    Lantech Systems: UNETix
    Microsoft: XENIX
    Santa Cruz Operation: XENIX
    Software Kinetics: VENIX
    Unisource Software: VENIX/86
    Venturcom: VENIX/86
    Whitesmiths: Co-Idris

If there are LOTS of requests for the results of this, I'll post a
summary to the net. Otherwise, I'll mail copies to those interested.
      Thanks in advance.

XENIX for Santa Cruz is quite good.
Rumor has it that sometime in the future there
will be a new release for the 8086 which should be
quite slick.
