[net.micro.att] Product Announcement: AT&T PC 6300 PLUS

attpc@mtuxo.UUCP (AT&T PC 6300 PLUS) (10/17/85)

(The following fact sheet was released by AT&T on 10/9/85.)

                AT&T PERSONAL COMPUTER 6300 PLUS

The AT&T PC 6300 PLUS gives users super MS-DOS performance,
compatibility with existing hardware and software, the exceptional
multi-tasking, multi-user features of the UNIX system, and an
easy-to-use user interface.

From the outside, the AT&T PC 6300 PLUS looks much like the AT&T PC
6300 -- except there is a new racing stripe across the middle of
the cabinet. The new computer will run both UNIX System V and
MS-DOS simultaneously. The concurrent operating system feature is
called OS Merge, and with it, MS-DOS runs as a UNIX task.

The 6300 PLUS implementation with the Intel 80286 processor has
been designed with no memory wait states, making the machine up to
25% faster than the IBM PC AT when running as an MS-DOS machine.

The AT&T PC 6300 PLUS has seven expansion slots, three of which can
accept 16-bit boards. Two configurations are available:

  - Hard disk unit with a 20 MB hard disk, 1.2 MB floppy, and 512K KB RAM
($6320 including keyboard and monochrome monitor)
  - Floppy disk unit with a 1.2 MB floppy, 360 KB floppy, and 512 KB RAM
($5095 including keyboard and monochrome monitor)

A .5 MB chip set is available to increase memory on the
motherboard. The MS-DOS capability is available immediately. The
OS Merge with UNIX option will be available in the first quarter of
1986 ($395; if you purchase a PC 6300 PLUS in 1985, you get a coupon
entitling you to UNIX free when it becomes available.)
The user will have the flexibility of using the AT&T PC 6300
PLUS as a super DOS machine only, or as a dual operating system
computer. This system has been certified operationally compatible
by Future Computing. Programs running under previous MS-DOS-based
machines will run on the PC 6300 PLUS. An upgrade option will also
be available for owners of the AT&T PC 6300 who wish to upgrade to
the PC 6300 PLUS ($2995).

Since this is a technical newsgroup, let's see some discussion about how
the "OS merge" is implemented!
