I would like to hear from anyone who has upgraded a AT&T Unix PC 7300 (RAM or hard disk). I am planning to buy one soon (for my home), and would like up upgrade it myself. Questions: o Are the RAM chips in sockets? o Jumpers required? o PAL chips? o Chip speed? o What is the disk interface? I hear rumor that the new Tandon AT clone has an option for a half height 40 meg drive with an average access time of 40ms. o Has anyone seen a 1/2 height with 40ms access time? Thanx Emmet P. Gray > {pur-ee,ihnp4}!uiucuxc!fthood!egray I have been running with the Microtek (Tandon) 50 meg 1/2 height drive for about 1 week now. It is remarkably faster. My benchmarks indicate that the difference between real time and sys+user time is exactly half of what it was before (with the 80ms drive I guess). I notice about 20-30% overall speedup on a 1meg system. It's also somewhat quieter. I did the replacement myself. The hardest part was finding the screws to get the machine open (2 under the keyboard and 2 in the back - then pry forward on the plastic in the front to clear 2 molded catches). I do notice that the number of incidents reported in /usr/adm/unix.log has increased with the new disk, but I've had no hard errors (more than I can say for the Toolin 40 meg I had before.) The AT&T folks say that incidents in /usr/adm/unix.log are normal so I'm ignoring it. With these changes, I find the unix-pc about the same speed as a diskless SUN 50/2 running 4.2BSD. -- ******* Corey Satten; John Fluke Mfg.
