[net.micro.att] SYSTEM V Revision 3.0

slb@bnl44.UUCP (San Barr lying around @ The Beach (slb @ Brookhaven Nat. Labs, L.I.)) (12/24/85)

  -----------------------------------
  | SYSTEM V Revision 3.0 is here! |
  -----------------------------------

I finally received my SVR3 package last Wed and I've been
overwhelmed by how well the system works.

Major enhancements have been done to the User Agent which
now gives you a series of added functions:

	1) The ability to access other users files via UA

	2) A security function which allows you to set r/w/x permissions
	   from UA

	3) A "Layout" function that gives you the layout of your directory
structure and allows you to go to that directory by simply
pressing B1 on it. This saves you the trouble of having to
open folder after folder after folder in order to get to
	   a specific file.

	4) A "cleanup" command that closes all folders and leaves you
at the Office menu. Nice addition.

	5) Addition of the "find" command as a UA "soft key".

	6) FINALLY - when you "close" the office window it asks you
if you wish to logout insted of saying "Can't close the
	   Office window".

Enhancements to the rest of the system:

	1) INSTANTANIOUS WINDOW MANIPULATION! It's a pleasure to
move and resize windows. The instant you click the mouse
	   you get the "rubberband".

	2) Ability to change window size/shape even if you don't have a
	   mouse.

	3) Support for remote printers (sends XEQfile to remote UNIX PC)

	4) The Korn Shell now comes standard.

	5) Supposedly an added command called "scrset(1)" which blanks out
the screen if there hasn't been input for a given amount of time.
Sorry guys - This one never came with my package but maybe
you'll have better luck - send me mail if you do get it.

	6) NO MORE HARD DRIVE BUZZING - When you initialize the hard drive
there's an actual check to see if there are any bad blocks on
the hard drive. If so they are put in the bad block list -
the drive hasn't buzzed since the new software was installed.

	7) Various other added commands and enhancements to the window
	   manager and the like.

				Enjoy!

If you haven't gotten the info on how to get SVR3 already I'll post
it shortly.

Are you sure this isn't just UNIX System V Release 2.0 version 3?
AT&T has been saying that SVR3 is not due for release until 1st
or 2nd Qtr 1986.

mats@fortune.UUCP (Mats Wichmann) (12/27/85)

Here we go again.

The software revision numbers for the UNIX PC (7300) do not track
the AT&T Release numbers for UNIX.

UNIX System V Revision 2.0 for the UNIX PC is not System V, Release 2.
As I understand it, Revision 3.0 is ALSO not System V, Release 2.

I can't get anyone to commit to saying System V, Release 3
will be available until late 1986....meanwhile System V,
Release 2.1 (which is later than System V, Release 2, Version 2,
which we all erroneously call V.2.2 - I guess I should actually
be V.2.0.2 !!) is just becoming available - I think you can get
it now if you are willing to accept 3B tape....

It should be noted that this is *pc7300/3b1* "Sys V.3" by Convergent
Technologies, not quite SV.2.2 and has little or no relation to SV.3 which
presumably would be AT&T code for 3b2, etc...

Also, my pc7300 doc for "SV.3" claims ksh, (Korne shell), is an option but
as I look just now... Yippee!! it's standard.

kozowski@reed.UUCP (Eric Kozowski) (12/29/85)

The version he is talking about is System V, Rev. 3, except it is for the
UNIX PC (PC 7300). It improves the window environment very much. They
changed from shell scripts to C.

You say that the Korn Shell comes standard? Well my 7300 doesn't have it (Yes
it does have Rev. 3 UNIX). Do you have the Development Package??? Maybe it's
standard with that?

hansen@pegasus.UUCP (Tony L. Hansen) (01/02/86)

Please do NOT refer to Version 3.0 of the 7300 System V release 1
Unix system as SVR3!

The term "SVR3" refers to System V Release 3, which is not out yet.

The Version 3.0 software is still "System V Release 1" based. That is, it is
a SVR1 machine, not SVR2 or even SVR3.

Please refer to it as SVr1v3 or SVR1V3. That way you won't confuse everybody
else.
