I recently got my 6000+, and I understand that UNIX Sys V is now available with OS-MERGE. Has anyone tried these? Are they any good? I also understand that I will need *at least* 2 Megs of RAM to run UNIX. Is this true? (I have only 1 MB now) And, last but not least, is the 6300+ *real* UNIX (ie: does it have an implementation of such things as nroff, troff, uucp, etc.?) UNIX with OS Merge for the AT&T PC6300 PLUS is now in controlled introduction. That means your order has to be individually approved by the Product Manager. Most copies have been going to software companies and to Bell Labs. A newer, faster, fuller-featured release will be generally available this Spring. Watch for the announcement. UNIX on the PLUS runs reasonably well in 1 Mbyte of memory on the motherboard. If you run an MS-DOS process (especially one bigger than 256Kb) or if you have two or more serious users logged in, then you really need more memory. A memory expansion card will be available at the same time as UNIX. The card can have from 0.5Mb to 2.0 Mb. A rule of thumb for *comfortable* performance: 1Mb for UNIX, 0.5MB for MS-DOS, 0.5Mb per additional user. Of course, you can get away with less, and your mileage may differ depending on your driving habits and road conditions. UNIX on the PC6300 PLUS is real SVR2, with several enhancements and a nice user interface. uucp certainly is included. nroff/troff is not available now, due to limited demand. If the demand picks up, AT&T might carry nroff/troff. Other wp and text-processing software will be available, though.

I have used OS Merge on the 6300+ very briefly. It features a user agent much like the one on the UNIX PCs that is very pretty with a color monitor. Do plan on getting plenty of memory though... between the two os's it should be good for a single user with a meg but will definately require more if you plan to run several. It looks like a VERY nice workstation. I was able to run lotus (for instance) simply by selecting an object from a window. It seems to integrate the to systems quite nicely... and allows you to move msdos files about in the UNIX filesystem without trouble. The usual hitch applies to text files (msdos uses crlf terminators with 128 byte records)... The folks who wrote this (locus) provided to conversion programs; dos2unix and unix2dos. These will be familiar to people who have used PC Interface, which I should add is a VERY slick tool for people who want MSDOS and UNIX and a DISK server all on their PC. OS Merge has essentially the same effect but does it all more cleanly and doesn't require a unix host or an ethernet. It is all accomplished by memory mapping and protection hardware on the 6300+... So don't plan on seeing this run on other 80286 micros. The memory mapping hardware does *magic* to assure that MSDOS programs see things that they normally expect (including the interrupt vectors!). OK, maybe this is not an outrage, it is an absurdity, I can't believe that it would take little more than a recompilation of the source code ( one make command). This is AT&T at its usual. Why not for simply one little make command have available nroff/troff for the public. All the other UNIX look-alikes (SCO XENIX V,...) have it. If nothing else, at least make it available for purchase. By the way, will the uucp softeware support a Hayes type modem or has AT&T also overlooked this defacto standard of the PC world? -- Michael Brochstein AT&T Information Systems, Middletown, NJ ihnp4!mtx5d!mtx5c!mab (201) 957-1764
