I recently purchased a Unix PC. Reading the Owner's Manual, I came across: "Do not turn off the power at the end of each day. Doing so causes unnecessary strain on your system." There would seem to be tradeoffs of keeping the system on versus keeping the system off. Take extreme cases. Say I will only work on the Unix PC during the weekends. Is it better to turn off the Unix PC monday thru friday, or keep it on? In an office environment, is it better to keep the machine on over the weekends or to turn it off? I don't mind leaving the machine on all the time, but I'm not interested in unnecessarily wearing it out for extended periods of time while I'm not using it. Should I keep the Unix PC on all the time? John D. P.S. I realize that if the PC is not on that: 1) It would be rather difficult for a remote user to logon. 2) The battery will not be recharging since it only charges while the system is actually running and not while it is just plugged in. 3) The system uses Sunday night to clean up unneeded files on the Unix PC. Of course, I think if one were to change the date/time or run the command(s) themselves, the result would be the same. -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Dempsey System Development Corporation A Burroughs Company Disclaimer: Everything! sdcrdcf!dempsey --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
