   4.  One of the little interlude stories ends with the line that
       the story was true because the teller's uncle told it to him,
       and "my uncle is as honest as me".  A direct take from Me_and_
       My_Uncle.  (I howled with laughter at that one. Mainly because
       in the song, the teller is NOT honest at all.)

In fact, most of the Interludes which didn't describe the progress of the
Tree held Dead references.  The story of making a weeping willow cry was a
reference to "Big River" for example.  Mo-ses referred to the one of
the characters in "Greatest Story Ever Told".  There were others in the
Interludes, but I don't recall them right now.

In addition, after the telling of the story in the cellar, the teller of the
story won't tell how things turned out for one of the characters.  It refers
directly to a line from "Terrapin", which goes something like:

    ... You decide if he was wise.
        The storyteller makes no choice, Soon you will not hear his voice.
        His job is to spread light and not to master.
        Since the end is never told we pay the teller off in gold
        In hopes he will come back, but he can not be bought or sold.
