[net.micro.att] PC7300 hard disk woes

todd@bu-cs.UUCP (Todd Cooper) (03/10/86)

The hard disk (20Meg) on my UNIXPC decided to STOP WORKING.
It was a sudden thing -- I turned it off for a 3-4 day period and
when I turned it back on, the harddisk does not respond!

Perhaps I should have left it on....

too late now. I have decided to take the hardwae drop-service repair contract
for ~$500 per annum.

any reason that people might know why it went bad -- TELL ME - ALSO
if anyone can suggest a NEW disk with better access time (half/full height)
please tell me. -- I am also curious if it would be a problem if the mother-
board have drive and hard disk -- what would be compatible?

To top it off, I ordered the Tech Reference Manual and the service manual --
which THEY BACK ORDERED. -- AT&T get your act together.

(an aside -- my school's 3B5 is still not installed and working after one
calendar year.)

I took the 20 meg miniscrib out of my 7300 and ran the hard disk
cables to a Atasi 50 meg with its own power supply. The Atasi has
33 msec access, nice and fast, and quiet. Oddly enough the 20 meg
miniscrib makes no noise in my desk draw!.

To Gen a new system with the Atasi you just answer "Other" on the format
menu and it will ask you what your drive looks like. The only hard
part was figuring out the partition's sizes. You have to use the hard disk
partition utility (diivy(1M)???) on the 20 meg first to know what
partition 1,2,4 should be, partition 3 is your root file system
(size 3 = total cyl - size(1+2+4)). It works great
and the speed of the whole machine is sooooo much better!!!

I started looking for a new drive when my 20 Meg decided to stop
working for whole seconds at a time!!!

I absolutely adore the UNIX PC's but have convulsions about the noise made
by the 20 MB miniscribe drive (the 10 MB isn't quite so loud). The solution
is quite simple. I got a Wren II (56 MB ala the atasi drive). This is the
same drive used in the larger version of the 3b1 UNIX PC. This is a full
height drive and sucks far too much power to use the UNIX PC power supply.
My fix is to buy the drive, replacement ribbon cabling(24"), and an I*M PC
power supply (a cheaper variety ~50 bucks). This works great and the drive
is quite silent... I should add that it also has the faster 33 ms av. access
time.

PS-- all of this can be had (for more money) from a company in Phila. PA
     called Feith Systems and Software.
