What a crock! ATTIS is liable to >lose big in the marketplace if they can't get their UNIX >act together any better than they have so far. I'd like to comment, not as an answer to this statement in particular, but to the tone of many similar ones: Aw, come on. I know that it's not nice to admit that AT&T EVER did anything right but all of this carping about their botching and commercialism of UNIX in getting to be a cliche. Is 4.2 just an approximation ? As a lonely independent hobbyist working away in his basement on a machine bought with his own money with no association to a think tank of Ph.D.'s of compsci, to or AT&T, or to any boby else; I have to say that AT&T HAS done a service for me. When I put together my first machine 6 years ago, 8K of ram, CP/M, s-100 bus, and the Tarbell cassette interface to tiny-C was the state of the art. The idea of having a UNIX machine was as remote as having a Marvin to do the dusting and a Ford Prefect as a guru. Now, for $4.5K I have a full blown UNIX V, a 20 Mb hard disc, and l meg of ram. (that's a 1000 K in chips.) So if it does have a few less features than the Cray-2 system, please let me enjoy my ignorance. And when you consider the goodies like Warren Montgomery's emacs and the korn shell that AT&T as given away thru THE STORE! I say that I think that I got my money's worth and FLAME ON ! Phil Karn,Sr. bellcore!opera!pkarn My views on this do not imply any congruency with those of Phil Karn,Jr. [bellcore!karn] who will probably give the first if not the longest and hottest flame.
