By chance, I've fallen into a pre-release copy of UNIX for my beast. (Perfectly honestly - it was geven to me by ATT) I have a few questions for those of you out there who can answer them. As a comment - I think it's great! Not too fast, but what can you expect from an 80286. Question #1: How do I use cu? We have a MICOM network here, and after attaching myself to it, going through the hardware setup for the RS232 port, and driving myself crazy, I've noticed that cu only works with modems! But that's not the problem; it says that there are no ports available. After reading the directions, I tried the -d switch. Very funny guys. Anything following the -d (which is *supposed* to be a device name such as /dev/tty, according to the manual) are taken as more flags. Any ideas on what's going on? How can I get it to use the MICOM? [it just occured to me that I should have tried quoting the /dev/tty arg... I'll have to try that...] Question #2: Was the 6300+ UNIX really supposed to be used with a 20MB disk? After installing the Development Package, Extended Terminfo Package, and OS-MERGE, I found that I had only 32% of my disk left. That's about 5MB. That's also not too much. So far, I've only seen the 6300+ with 20MB disks. This too is a cruel joke - I wonder when they will start selling them with 40+MB disks... Question #3: I assume that uucp, ins, and the others won't work with the MICOM either. Correct? Question #4: Since the system allows for /dev/tty and /dev/tty1, I assume that I can (or will be able to) add another serial card. Can I use an IBM compatible card? > As a comment - I think it's great! Not too fast, but what can you expect from > an 80286. The speed (or lack thereof) is primarily due to the rather slow seek time for the 20meg hard disk. Secondarily due to the code produced by the c complier. > > Question #1: > How do I use cu? I started with SVR2c1, then SVR2c2 and am now running SVR2c3, all of which are pre-releases. I had problems with cu running the c1 and c2 releases, c3 seems fine. I have used modems and DATAKIT, but no micom. > Question #2: > Was the 6300+ UNIX really supposed to be used with a 20MB disk? Right now the 20 meg is all you can get. The newer ones are supposed to have one that seeks in 65ms rather than the 85ms of the current models. After installing all the things you mentioned, I ended up with about 10 meg free. Note the size of the DOS partition (if any) will affect this. As for larger capacity disks, I hear a half-height 40meg that seeks in under 35ms has been approved. Also some people here are running 68meg full-height drives. My guess is that there will be some announcements along this line at COMDEX. > > Question #3: > I assume that uucp, ins, and the others won't work with the MICOM > either. Correct? UUCP is HoneyDanber, so my guess is it will work. But hold off any hard conclusions till you see the official release. > > Question #4: > Since the system allows for /dev/tty and /dev/tty1, I assume that I can > (or will be able to) add another serial card. Can I use an IBM > compatible card? As you have a /dev/tty1, you must have release c1 of UNIX. In c3, there is no /dev/tty1: but don't panic! I heard there were problems with the driver so it was pulled from the pre-release(s), till it is fixed for the official release. I have an IBM asynch card in my PLUS configured as COM2. I run a terminal emulator under OS-MERGE and the hardware works ok. However, 1200 baud is about as fast as it will run without experiencing data-loss. To explain: right now the UNIX scheduler is giving OS-MERGE the highest priority, but when UNIX starts swapping the DOS process can be delayed enough to lose data. > > Thanks in advance to anyone who can enlighten me!
