[] I have written some of the diagnostic software in use here at Olivetti for their M28, which is an AT-compatible computer, certainly one of the best to be unleashed to the world. [No kidding! I've seen other manufacturer's feeble attempts]. I wanted to check the power-on diagnostic software to see if it would detect unusual conditions and report them. I removed various cables, and recorded the message which appeared. I used an Olivetti M28 prototype computer with a Western Digital WD1002-WAH disk controller and OPE 5221 disk drive. [This may or may not be a configuration one can purchase]. Out of this effort I made some observations which I think are useful to people using AT-like computers. The results of my observations are presented below in a quick lookup fashion. THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS A FIELD SERVICE GUIDE. NEITHER OLIVETTI NOR MIKE SLIFCAK ARE LIABLE FOR USING THIS INFORMATION. In general, turn the power OFF first. I like to unplug the computer from the wall in case there are exposed AC wires inside the box [found rarely these days-but I'm cautious |-)]. Also, make sure that pin 1 at the controller is connected to pin 1 at the drive [Ignore color stripes- match numbers or square solder pads on the printed circuit boards' interfaces]. MESSAGE UPON THE CONSOLE CONSTRUCTIVE MOTION 1780 Disk 0 failure 1781 Disk 1 failure re-seat the power cable to the drive. check the power cable at the supply end. replace frayed or broken power cable. re-seat the control cable. replace control cable if message continues. 1782 Disk controller failure re-seat controller in slot. replace controller if message continues. 1790 Disk 0 error 1791 Disk 1 error re-seat the data cable. replace data cable if message continues. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please post responses to me at: UUCP: {hplabs,ihnp4,allegra}!oliveb!oliven!slif As usual, I thank Olivetti for access to the net, and I do not represent them in this posting.
