[net.micro.att] Help 6300+ and Penril ACU

ejk47@iham1.UUCP (kufeldt) (09/25/86)

I need help connecting a Penril ACU to a AT&T 6300+.
The ACU works fine for processes that use getty (like ct),
but does not work for processes that use uugetty (like cu).

When I try to use cu the response is DEVICE LOCKED. I loooked
at files Device and Dialers. Those files appear correct. (I
compared them against a Penril ACU defined on a 3B2.)

Called Customer Support and they said check the cable between
the 6300 and the ACU. I did and did not spot anything obvious.
The cable is wired like the following:

	6300+ Penril
	Pin to Pin
	1 1
	2 2
	3 3
	6 6
	7 7
	8 8
	20 20
	22 22

The above wiring worked fine on the 3B2, but does not on the
6300+. As soon as the CU command is invoked, I get a DEVICE
LOCKED response. Note, there are no entries in the /usr/spool/locks
directory when this happens. The response appears to be generated
by what the 8250 chip is seeing on a status? lead.

I would sure appreciate any help I can get.

I'm not certain, but this problem might be caused by the PLUS
insisting on having Carrier Detect always high.
If the Penril can be configured that way (dip switch or software),
then do it. Otherwise make an EIA connector that will pin CD to DTR
and keep it high.
