In article <180@uw-vlsi.ARPA> li@uw-vlsi.UUCP (Phyllis Li) writes:
>>Now, the author request. Other than Heinlein (whom I have always seen as
>>fiercly for the equal ability of women), Tanith Lee, Diane Duane, Damon
>>Knight, Piers Anthony, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Issac Asimov, Spider Robinson,
>>Andre Norton, Anne McCaffery, Foster, Roddenbury, Dickson, Saunderson,
>>Aspin (ok, ok, maybe he is a bit more fantasy than SF), Eric Lustbader,
>>Ursula LeGuin, and Bradbury...

In a later article...
>Elizabeth Lynn... R.A. Mac Avoy, James Tiptree, Jonna Russ, Joy Chant,
>Frank Miller, Patricia McKillip, Delany Tepper, Russ, Salmonson, and, sorry,
>we have to strike Piers Anthony...

Add Anderson, Robin McKinley (anyone ever read any sf of hers? I know she
writes magnificent fantasy, but everyone (ie 5 people) said that I should
include her in my list), Donaldson (again!) Tamora Peirce, Cherry Wilder,
Niven, and Nourse (the one of medical and *Bladerunner fame, NOT the other).
Zelazny has to be added, a princess of Amber and a lady trying to be a
dragon in Roadmarks and a rather tough little lady in Damnation Alley have
gotten him off the hook. Oh, the wonderful CL Moore, and her hubby, uhm...
sigh...

The point is, if you look at that list above and tried to compile a list of
creators of good male characters (ie not brainless hunks, just as the above
are creaters of non-brainless screechers, and *good* as in well-written) to
match, there wouldn't be all that many more. As with this list, I am
talking fairly established sf-writers.

So sf, I think is better than the Real World with real Feminism. Sure,
there are a couple of real jerks writing the other stuff, but then there is
Ms. Green... However I think that sf *is* Better!!
