Does anyone have a copy of EMACS (or some subset thereof) that will run on a 3B2? Ron Wolenty AT&T Indianapolis, IN

Micro Emacs V 3.7 runs very nicely on a 3b2/300 3b2/400. I might be able to make a small number of copies on floppy if you send me stamped self addressed formated and systemed floppies. For a real full blown EMACS Unipress has one for the 3bX series. I believe a set of diffs to Gnu Emacs were posted recently in net.emacs to enable it to run on the 3b series. We were thinking of installing Gnu emacs on a couple of 3b2s here but decided not to because we weren't sure if the 3b's had enough swap space to handle Gnu emacs. You can also try Jove (Jonanthan's Own Version of Emacs). It is a subset of emacs that should be enough for most needs. I am not too sure about the capabilities of jove because I haven't used it too often. You can probably install jove on a 3b2 without too many problems because it is not as big as Gnu and doesn't try to do as many things. Also I recall seeing a "#define SYSV" in tune.h in the source for jove (so fancy berkeley features are not necessary). Both Gnu emacs and Jove were distributed in the "user contributed" software tape for 4.3 bsd. Any neighbouring berkeley unix site should be happy to give you a copy. > Ron Wolenty > AT&T > Indianapolis, IN > Naim Abdullah Dept. of EECS, Northwestern University, {ihnp4, chinet}!nucsrl!naim

AT&T sells Warren Montgomery's version of emacs. Internal customers can get it free from TOAD; external customers can buy it through the Toolchest. Versions of it also run on MS-DOS. I haven't tried it on a 3b2 yet, but MicroEMACS 3.7 should work just fine. We've got it running on a couple SVr2 systems. Versions previous to 3.7 do not support System V. It is available from your friendly neighborhood mod.sources archive. Basically, to port to the 3b2 you would first unpack it, change 2 lines in estruct.h, and type 'make'. That's it. Of course, MicroEMACS is nowhere near as awesome as Unipress or GNU, but it is trivial to port, free, and small. -- Steve Barber Rabbit Software Corp. ...!ihnp4!{cbmvax,cuuxb}!hutch!barber ...!psuvax1!burdvax!hutch!barber (215) 647-0440 7 Great Valley Parkway East Malvern PA 19355
