I am posting this for John, please mail to him at pesnta!csusac!clevengr -earlw The Computer Science Department at California State University in Sacramento has a newly-acquired P-E 3220 running Edition VII, and we are looking for someone who can help us with a problem. Edition VII is currently released with Version 1.0 of the Berkeley Pascal interpreter (pi). pi seems to work for small programs, but (as documented by the Berkeley authors) fails to handle very large ones. We are interested in porting some large (>7000 line) programs from other systems, and pi will not handle them even by changing the declarations in the pi code related to the size of the program being interpreted. Berkeley is up to Version 3.0 of pi, but their development work is on a VAX. We took a shot at porting the V3.0 pi, but there seem to be too many differences between Edition VII and the 4.2BSD system-type stuff the new pi uses. Anyway, what we really need is a compiler, not an interpreter. Is there anyone who has any of the following running on a P-E Unix machine ? - a Pascal compiler (Berkeley pc generates VAX code; has anyone implemented a P-E code generator?) - the latest version of pi? or some other interpreter? - any other method of handling large Pascal programs (e.g. a Pascal-to-C translator)? We know, we know, "write it in C in the first place". We would have if we'd had C when the programs were written. We're hoping someone can help us avoid the pain of manual translation.... Any help you can give us would be appreciated; we will respond in kind in any way we're able. I second the call for a decent Pascal compiler. We'd like to convert CAI which is being written by law schools across North America, in Pascal on IBM-PC's, to run under Edition VII. Dave Sherman -- {utzoo pesnta nrcaero utcs hcr}!lsuc!dave {allegra decvax ihnp4 linus}!utcsri!lsuc!dave
