[pe.cust.general] XELOS arrives!!

brent@itm.UUCP (Brent) (03/28/85)

X
Well, the long-awaited XELOS arrived yesterday. There's a
lot of documentation, (19 small binders) which appears fairly well done.
Since we're a production machine, we can't just shut down and bring
it up. That and conversion of our programs will have to await the
week-ends of the coming month. If XELOS has all the stuff in it
that it claims (and it works) it should be real nice.

Ok, people - CONFESS!! - pe.cust.bugs has been fairly quiet
recently. What bugs have people found in XELOS??? If no one has
played with it too much, maybe no one knows. If someone at one
of the regional pe* sites would like to be a repository for XELOS
bug reports, that would be fine. Preferably someone with source,
who could look into fixing them. (hint, hint, earlw). If no one
at P-E has time to do this, I would be glad to. I can't do
anything about the bugs, as we're only a binary site, but I'd
be glad to listen. I would suggest we keep a running list of bugs,
who sent in a SCR on them, and when. In this way, we may be able
to get a jump on things and form a much more coherent body of
knowledge about Xelos than we have about Edition VII.

What say ye voices of the net?

P.S. Am I missing something? We're only getting about one
message per day in the pe.cust.* groups. If this is indeed
an accurate measure of the traffic, why do we have all these
subgroups? Why wouldn't pe.cust be adequate? Or do we
envision a great and mighty future?

Brent, please be the central point for the Xelos bugs until I get my Xelos
system running :-). I have the 5.2 uucp running on Edition VII and today
is the start of the news/mail/uucp testing. Full load. If anyone is having
problems with pesnta, please tell me so I can work out the bugs. The 8/32
system may be fixed, I will put a copy of the 5.2 uucp on it and see
if it can handle the normal uucp/mail/news load. This uucp has improvements
over the AT&T 5.2 uucp code. It would take another couple of months to make it
really run with the wind.

Earl is apparantly knee-deep in lots of stuff, so he's suggested
that I be the logger of Xelos bugs, which I would be glad to do.
We're going to try booting it for the first time tomorrow (Saturday,
the 30th), so we'll see.

It's a whole new ball-game folks. I'd be glad to get not only
bug reports, but hints and suggestions on system setup and tuning,
performance differences from Edition VII, etc. Xelos has a bunch
of graphics stuff for the Tek 4014 series, and I've got a Tek
emulation package for my MacIntosh on order, so I'm anxious to
give the graph package a workout.

Anyway, I'm all ears. Do any of you actually have Xelos? Do
you have it on order? Do you care? Let's get some traffic generated
here.

Out of curiosity, how many of you reading this have Macintoshes? (I have
one, and have a few of the Macintosh/Unix programs working on Edition 7, is
why I asked (macput, macget, Macintosh Termcap entry). If there is
sufficient interest, I could post them (they are short).

In Santa Clara, at least three people have MACs:

	earlw	(Earl Wallace)
	genem	(Gene Mueller)
	toniw	(Toni Waselewski)

We have the programs necessary for moving files between the MAC and the UNIX
system. I archive all MAC source programs as well.

Apart from the fact that Xelos isn't slated to be available
for the 3220, is there any reason why I would want it?

I understand v7. It's the same system that runs everywhere else -
it's the base for all of System III/V and 4.1/4.2BSD, not to mention
other derivatives. Its bugs are mostly fixed or at least found.
It's running fine on a production machine for CAI.... can anyone
suggest a good reason for me to change?
