This is a "UniTip" message. Under Edition VII 2.4, the default tape device was the raw device while under XELOS R00 it is the block device. So don't worry when the XELOS tar complains about tape errors, just specify the raw device. Almost Everyone hits this trap. In XELOS, the /usr/lib/sa/sadc program can't read the /dev/kmem file, you will get some error when it starts up. Just set the group name of the sadc program to match the group name of the /dev/kmem file. I think thats the problem. There is another "ownership" type problem and I wish I could remebmer what the heck it is.... It may be the spooler system. If you get an error with a setuid program that seems to be file access related, look for the proper ownership (yea, I know, it should have been right before it went out the door... I think the overall product is really on the up and up). The spooler system is easy to set up, just the LP spooler section twice (admin. guide) before going after it. [Just for the record, it will be another couple of days before I have any XELOS system running here.] For people running 8/32, 7/32 and 3220 machines, I understand the problems: you have to upgrade your machine or just live with Edition VII. The XELOS port is the first time P-E has ported UNIX and they had to spend more time in the general porting and less time making the port run like mad. They are in the "make it run like mad" mode now. Edition VII is not going to see all the goodies that XELOS will. If want the speed improvements, new software packages, etc. You MUST move to XELOS. It really is becoming a *GOOD* product. -- Earl Wallace UUCP: ..!{ihnp4, ucbvax!hplabs, ucbvax!twg}!pesnta!earlw PHONE: (408) 727-5540 x230 USMAIL: Perkin-Elmer Corp., Santa Clara, Calif. 95054
