[pe.cust.general] Interchange User's Group

Plans are coming along for the Interchange 85 meeting in October. I hope to
post a tentative schedule for the conference in the next few weeks. We have
taken to heart some of the comments received after last year's meeting
by the UNIX users attending. This year we will have more sessions dealing
with UNIX, in parallel with the OS/32 and other sessions. Now we need
some ideas on what to fill the sessions up with.

While I was in NJ, I stopped in to see the product management group for
UNIX. They had asked me to stop in as they are reading these newsgroups
and were looking for a method to channel official statements concerning
questions from users and a way of getting official policy statements out,
both to the net and other P-E UNIX users not on the net. I agreed to be
a clearing house for this, for the moment. While I was there, I took the
time to ask about P-E's position on several AT&T UNIX products I was
interested in. After some discussion I said that I would poll the P-E users
on the net to see what interest there is out there.
First, I asked about the AT&T toolchest. I found out that P-E is looking
at some of the programs for their own use. (the development group has a
license) They do not seem interested in reselling them to their customers
and I can understand their position, with all the administrative work they
would probably have to charge too much. However, they would be willing to
provide through the User's Group a diff listing of any changes they had to
make to programs to get them to run.
Second, I asked about Honey/Danber(sp?) uucp. They are also looking at this
program, but since it may be quite expensive ( I remember some discussion
on this on the net several weeks ago), they are not sure if it is viable.
Are any of you interested in it and how much would you pay for it ?
Third, I asked about virtual memory. P-E seems committed to tracking AT&T
System V and following systems. I recall that AT&T have announced their
intention to include virtual memory in their next (or next +1) release.
P-E say they are still looking into virtual memory and wonder how many
users need or want it.
Forth, I asked about support for the Teletype 5620 (Blit) terminal.
I would like to have one of them, but only if they are fully supported on
P-E. P-E seems interested if the market is there.
Lastly, is there any interest in S or Writer's Workbench ?

Please pass any comments you have on to me and I will pass them on to P-E.

S and Virtual Memory sort of go hand in hand! We have S already and
are very much in need of virtual memory to support it and other statistics
applications (e.g., GLIM). Most porting problems with S, by the way,
seem to have more to do with bugs in the f77 compiler than anything else.

[I'd be interested in any evaluative comments on the PE System V f77. We
are about to upgrade to System V or 4.2 and an f77 with fewer bugs would
be a big argument in favour of the former.]
