The interest in the Grateful Dead and the response to the poll of the past
couple of weeks seems to warrant a subgroup of net.music devoted to them.
Unfortunately, the flaming that has started up within the past week in
net.music also warrants a separate group, for rather negative reasons.
Anyway, net.music.gdead has been created. It was created by the site
admin at stcvax, who agreed to help handle hassles if there are any.
(Incidentally, he's not a DeadHead.)
Note that the name of the group is net.music.gdead, the "g" added for
clarity. (The only dead musicians who fit the topic are Pig and Keith.)
For those of you in net.music who are NOT DeadHeads or are very new to the
phenomenon, there will be a few introductory articles in the next week
or so. You might follow the group for a while to see if it's of interest.
Realize that the Dead have close ties to many other contemporary groups:
Jefferson Starship, Kingfish, Bobby & the Midnites, JGB, Dinosaurs,
All-Stars,... I would hope that >>musical<< discussions of more general
interest will continue to go to net.music for non-D'Heads as well. Some
postings will be appropriate to both groups--but if you do this, do ONE
posting with multiple groups so that we won't have to see it twice.
Topics for the new subgroup include at least: songlists, tour schedules,
rumors, evolution of new songs, personal notes on members of the band, trivia.
We need to be particularly careful about two things: Don't violate copy-
rights by posting the lyrics to entire songs, and don't go trying to sell
tapes. [You should know what I mean--a line or two from a song, as many of
us use in our .signature files, is cool. Covering the cost of blank tape
on a one-sided swap is OK; trying to make a profit is not.]
Back to the first thing I said: Interest SEEMS to warrant a new subgroup.
It has been created, but the premise is "use it or lose it". This
should be the way any new group is created, but in particular with this
group (and the controversy surrounding it), if the traffic drops off
sharply in a month or so, it should be removed.
