[net.music.gdead] Red rock shows - ever again?

According to a friend in Boulder, the shows last June at Red Rocks may be the
last. Apparently, the concert administrators vetoed the idea of a FOURTH
encore, although the band and the crowd was primed. In punishment to the
concert people (and specifically the head of the ticketing agency out there,
whose name is now infamous (but forgotten by me)), the dead are refusing to go
back. I haven't seen the dead at Red Rocks, but I did visit the amphitheater,
and it is one of the most spectacular places, with views of the mountains and
Denver. Would be (would have been??) good for the head.

Any better details from the Denver area? For example, didn't all these
problems go down the same night golf-ball size hail nearly cancelled the
concert?

You are referring to Barry Fey, the head of Feyline, which is *not* the
ticketing agency but the promoter. Both Feyline and the Grateful Dead office
have *repeatedly* denied rumors that hostility between the Dead and Feyline
had anything to do with cancellation of the Red Rocks shows last September,
and I really wish people would stop spreading such rumors unless they
have some facts to back it up. Not that I'm all that fond of Fey and his
goon squads, but let's not go blaming him for something that isn't his fault.

Yes, this was the infamous hailstorm night. The weather was *relatively*
mild at the Rocks that day, however. There was never any danger of the concert
being cancelled. Most of the big hailstones fell in Denver, not up in the
mountains. At Red Rocks the weather was limited to rain the entire night,
and some really spectacular lightning shots. In fact, on my tape of the
Wednesday show, cheering at inappropriate places during Ramblin' Rose,
C.C. Rider and Candyman can be heard, indicating a particularly brilliant
lightning flash. The light show in the sky was really outrageous that night.

Reportedly, the reason for the cancellation of the September Red Rocks
shows last year was due to technical problems with the equipment and the
weather that the band felt needed to be worked out before they play Red
Rocks again. The rumor mill out here has it that the Dead *will* play
the Rocks this year on September 4,5 & 6, but I called Feyline and they
refuse to either confirm or deny this. I sure hope things get worked out,
because I'd *much* rather get hailed on at the Rocks than see the Dead in a
barn like the McNichols Sports Arena.
